After months of speculation, Representative Dean Phillips announced on Thursday that he will run as the Democratic nominee for President against President Joe Biden.

The Minnesota Democrat made this announcement during an interview with CBS News.

When questioned about his potential presidential bid for the upcoming year, Phillips firmly stated, “Yes, I am.” I have to. I won’t sit silently in the face of the numbers that are telling us that we are heading into a crisis next November.”

The Biden campaign remained silent in response to inquiries for comments during the Thursday evening.

At 54 years old, Phillips is casting a challenge to the 80-year-old incumbent president, and he has previously encouraged other candidates to challenge Biden as well.

“As a Democrat, I revere Joe Biden. He saved this country. Phillips, during an August interview on ABC News’ “Meet the Press,” remarked, “He has the potential to fortify his lasting legacy”This is not a call to action about me. It’s a call to action to the president to pass the torch.”

Phillips later added, “Get in, my friends. Welcome everyone on the bench. Don’t wait five years. We need you now.”

This move comes as Biden faces stability approval ratings among voters amid concerns about the economy and the president’s age, although Phillips had previously ruled out running for the presidency.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, when asked if there was any reaction from the president to the reports of Phillips considering entering the race, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said they would not comment on electoral politics but praised the nearly “100 percent support” for Biden within the Congress.

Phillips resigned from his position in the House Democratic leadership at the beginning of October

stating that it was appropriate to step aside to avoid distracting from the 2024 presidential race as “his beliefs are inconsistent with my caucus’s overwhelming majority when it comes to the 2024 presidential race.”

A member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, a bipartisan group of lawmakers whose goal is to work across the aisle, Phillips worked for small startups before serving in Congress and leading his family’s business,

and assisting in the creation of Talenti Gelato, as outlined on his website’s congressional biography.

In 2018, Phillips defeated incumbent Republican Erik Paulsen by turning the current Republican seat into a Democratic one, winning 55.7% to 44.3%.

Democratic National Committee member Ron Harris joined the race for the Congress seat early this month alongside Phillips. Harris announced his candidacy with a post saying, “Our community deserves strong, effective, democratic leadership, ready to stand with President Joe Biden and work for working families.

Dean Phillips began his career by working for two years with equipment, bicycle, and textile companies.

He worked hard in his family’s business before graduating with a master’s in business administration from the University of Minnesota in the United States in 2000. Afterward, he became known as Phillips Distilling Company.

Dean had maintained his position since 1961, making him the initial Democrat to achieve such an extended tenure. He ran in the 2018 elections for Minnesota’s third congressional district seat in the US House of Representatives.

Phillips defeated former sales partner Cole Young in the Democratic primary, winning with 81.6% of the vote and claimed all three county districts.

According to the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University, Phillips received a bipartisanship score of 1.1 in the 116th United States Congress in 2019, earning him the 27th place out of 435 participants.
